MAR

Morocco has become a popular destination for European expatriates attracted by its proximity to the continent, low cost of living, and vibrant cities like Marrakech and Tangier. Its French-Arabic bilingual environment, Mediterranean climate, and growing digital nomad infrastructure make it an increasingly attractive base for remote workers and retirees seeking an affordable lifestyle close to Europe.

Common Risks

  • fake guides in Fes and Marrakech medinas leading tourists to commission-paying shops
  • "friendly local" scams ending in expensive mint tea ceremonies
  • overcharging taxi drivers in tourist cities without meters
  • henna tattoo artists in Djemaa el-Fna demanding extortionate payment after application

Examples of areas to avoid: Isolated parts of Marrakech medina late at night, Casablanca's Hay Hassani and Sidi Moumen districts at night, Tangier port area — hustle and tourist-targeting scams prevalent
